    Scarabs were used by living individuals as seals from the start of the Middle Kingdom (ca. BCE) onwards. These scarabs, like JHUAM and , had inscriptions on their flat bottoms and could be impressed into mud or clay. The most common inscription for these scarabs was the owner’s name. Since the year , when Professor Flinders Petrie’s book on Historical Scarabs became “out of print,” the want of a comprehensive work on these interesting little Egyptian antiquities has been much felt. Two volumes on Egyptian Scarabs, it is true, have been published since that date, but these works treat of private collections and do not claim to deal with the subject in its entirety.

    There were also a number of funerary types of scarabs such as the large winged scarab, virtually always made of blue faience and incorporated into the bead nets covering mummies, and the heart scarab, usually inscribed with Chapter 30B of the Book of the Dead which was included in burials from at least the 13th Dynasty ( BC).
