One of the best ways to become familiar with poetry is to read what poets have to say about it. Mary Oliver has a book called The Poetry Handbook which is an easy intro into the forms and functions. In a similar vein, Edward Hersch's How to Read a Poem is very good for the beginner. For a perspective on poetry's role in society, try Czeslaw Milosz's Witness of Poetry.   Self-publish a poetry book. Poetry has always been a powerful medium for the world of children’s literature. From Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends to Sylvia Plath’s The Bed Book, many well-renowned poets have written works with young readers as their primary works of children’s poetry create memories and wisdom that kids carry into adulthood. A few years ago, when my kindergartners and I began writing poetry, I searched for new ways to celebrate their work. Each publishing project we embarked upon brought unique learning experiences, but the poetry quilt we made — which hangs in our school library — .
